Durban – An Eskom senior employee has allegedly uncovered corruption at the company where Eskom “technicians” were installing a “million rand ticket” – unlimited electricity usage for R900 – in the Hammarsdale area.
The senior employee said he and a colleague had made this discovery after working in the area for years.
“At some stage the area was littered with illegal street connections and the wires criss-crossed gardens, fields and open spaces. Eskom cleaned up the area and installed meters inside the houses. These technicians seemed to follow door-to-door not long after that, ” he said.
JOHANNESBURG – City Power, Johannesburg’s electricity utility has punched holes in Eskom’s request to claw back billions of rands for coal costs, and questioned the increase in coal costs while coal volumes for 2014/15 to 2016/ 17 fell.
Eskom has applied for recovery of R66 billion in respect for, among others, variances in revenue, coal, independent power producers (IPPs) and Open Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGTs) costs. The revenue variance accounts for 67 percent (R44bn) of the R66bn that Eskom wants to recover, while IPPs and coal account for R7.4bn and R3.5bn, respectively.
CAPE TOWN – Eskom is pursuing urgent coal purchasing from current suppliers and those suppliers that are not currently contracted to Eskom as the stockpile at its power stations dwindle, forcing the state-owned entity to resort to burning diesel.
Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe, responding to questions from Business Report, said the power utility had secured 14 new coal contracts in September and October and some were for Majuba Power Station.
